The Original Googol

GoogolBefore Google there was Googol! The original googol is a very large number. Coined by the nine year old nephew of American mathematician, Edward Kasner back in 1938, the googol is the number 1 followed by 100 zeroes.

For those that like their numbers shortened, or as they say in the business, using scientific notation, the Googol can be written as:

1 googol = 1.0 × 10100

A googol can also be referred to as ten duotrigintillion, ten thousand sexdecillion, ten sexdecilliard depending on which scale you are referring to. Isn’t math fun!

As for Google, it’s become a very large number in financial terms.

This amazing number has been used as the basis for the latest contribution to the eLFonian Artwork Centre. You can find it under Mystical Math.
