Why on Wednesday?

Wednesday WhyThis issue of Why on Wednesday explores a question that has been loitering in the minds of Cyberians ever since banks opened their doors for business. Banks have been scrutinised by authorities and the public at large over practices that continue to baffle even to this day. One practice that has gone largely unnoticed for some time has finally come under the looking glass and the watchful eye of The eLFonian.

Last Week’s Results: Last week we looked at “Why do people order double cheeseburgers, large fries, and a diet coke?” With 50% of respondents (the top response) seeing this food combination as a balanced diet in which the acid in the diet coke eats away the fat of the burger and chips, it seems that the marketing strategy is working. Check out the complete survey results here.

This week, The eLFonian focuses on the fuddling financial foible:

Why do banks leave vault doors open and then chain the pens to the counters?

This week, with the aid of Contributing Collaborator, @heidimedina, The eLFonian has determined that there are several likely reasons for this perplexing practice. Utilising multiple avenues of research including studying the entrails of oxen1, the following list of likely reasons for this baffling SOP (Standard Operating Procedure) were determined.

Because …

Have your say! What do you think? Why do banks leave vault doors open and then chain the pens to the counters? Your feedback is important and could help restore balance and order to Cyberia so please take a minute to respond to the poll. Click on your preferred response and then click on “Vote” (one only per reader).

Poll Closing Date: This poll will close at 12:00 UTC (GMT/Zulu) on the Tuesday following publication of Why on Wednesday so be quick and don’t miss out on your opportunity to vote. The results will be published in the next issue of Why on Wednesday and will also be updated in this post after the poll is closed so come back, review the results and leave a comment if you are so inclined.

The Next Why: Next week, The eLFonian will look at cars. What do you do with yours?

A Question for WoW? If you have a question that has been baffling you for a while or has been keeping you up at night, that has you feeling nauseous or simply leaving you curiously contemplating matters you have never before considered, why not ask The eLFonian. Email your question to elfy@elfonian.com. There are currently a number of questions playing on The eLFonian’s mind so there may be a delay in addressing your particular question – unless of course, your question “tickles the borders of Cyberspace” (part of The eLFonian mission) in which case, up the queue you go!

1. No oxen were hurt while conducting this research project. We visited the local butcher where we simply asked to have a close look at their stock. While agreeing to our request, the butcher was left scratching his head and, as we were leaving, asked us not to return to his store to conduct such a macabre ritual.

  2. Haha, so true on the bank employees getting a good laugh. I guess they need to get their laughs somewhere but really…what is up with the really short chains? Thanks for letting me collaborate on this, it was fun 🙂

True! I suppose standing behind the screen gets a little boring so peeping over to the counter to see a customer struggle with the pens might bring some enjoyment to the day. Aren’t bank bosses caring in thinking of their staff in this way?
